History
Wiki.

• Born the illegitimate daughter of a Liberati servant in Marnas Pell. Is married off at 13 to a man who abused her physically, emotionally, and sexually. Becomes a widow at 13 when a pirate sees her being abused in a tavern and slits her husband's throat.
• Follows her rescuer, Jack Rackham, everywhere he goes, including onto the decks of Captain Charles Vane's pirate ship. Stays in the background while Jack works his way into the quartermaster position. Gains a reputation for murder and her relationship with Jack.
• Part of a scheme to gain the location of a Qunari ship carrying gaatlok, and it...ends badly. Among other things, her crewmates brutally rape a prostitute, Max, who'd been in on the scheme; Anne attempts to protect her from further abuse but doesn't succeed. She kills the worst offender (and the remainder of the crew, to throw off suspicion as to the motive) and ends up blackballed as a result.
• Begins sleeping with Max on the down-low, tries OT3-ing it with Jack after he finds out. It gets complicated. (A lot of this stuff gets complicated.)
• Gets unblackballed, acquires a ship with Max and Jack to get the gaatlok. Problem is, the crew won't accept two women partners, and Jack makes Max the official, on-the-books one. Anne's furious and betrayed--she kills multiple people and leaves Nascere in search of nonexistent new beginnings.
• Comes back to Nascere when it becomes clear strangers see her as Anne of Jack-and-Anne and don't want to hire her onto a crew. Makes up with Jack, sort of, gets all that gaatlok.
• After some fort-building drama and gaatlok liquidation, Tevinter decides to try and lay down the law. Anne and Jack start running with their share of the prize, but Jack decides to go for a pardon and gets himself arrested. A lot of heartache and scheming later, she rescues him from his doom.
• A bunch of boat stuff happens, including sailing around with a pirate legend that Anne tolerates for Jack's sake. They narrowly avoid keelhauling, though said pirate legend does not.
• Captured by Venatori and forced to watch a lot of crewmates die before coming up with a plan to save the rest. Said plan leaves her at death's door for months in Tallo.
• Once she's capable of holding a dagger again, returns to sailing and fighting the good fight around Nascere, right up until the point where she gets a rift shard in her hand.
• Decides with Jack to go to Kirkwall in search of a fix from some old allies.

Personality

The stories might tell you Anne Bonny is Jack Rackham's dog, the bloodthirsty pirate whose will goes toward enforcing his schemes. A killer, a lackey, someone whose silent, bestial existence is lived on someone else's word.

Parts of the stories are true. Anne's a woman unafraid of brutality, exacted on others or burdened on her own body in aid of some greater goal. She learned long ago to embrace dirty work as a means to an end: it saved her from a miserable existence as the child bride of a cruel man, helped her hold her own aboard ships and among pirates, and ensured she'd always find a way to survive. She's frequently the silent observer in a conversation, listening from under a hat flopped over one eye. And Maker knows that if she isn't around Jack Rackham in any given moment, she knows how to find him.

But to listen too closely to the tales told in broadsides is to miss Anne's intense sense of loyalty. For the people and causes that matter to her, she's willing to do whatever she has to, even at great personal expense. There's no room in gossip for the complicated web of feeling that dictates actions that look straightforward, and beneath a quiet surface, Anne Bonny is roiling with emotions she doesn't always have the words to express. At times, she feels intense rage and struggles to respond to it in ways that won't make her life worse. At other times, she wrestles with longings and desires she has to learn to name.

Most of all, the broadsides tell a static story, and Anne's changed immensely in the last few years. Though she's still most inclined towards letting conversation flow around her, she's increasingly willing to voice her opinions when it seems as though the people around her aren't willing to do so--or don't see what she does. She's unafraid of speaking truth to power, even to the legends of her field, and she doesn't worry about what it looks like to use caution in a dangerous situation. And while she uses violence to her own ends, she's actively trying not to be reckless with it anymore. For people she cares about, at least. Anne's slowly grown into a battle-tested, plainspoken woman, someone who's generally confident in her very particular set of skills but increasingly thoughtful about where and how she uses them.

Opinions & Affiliations

The Chantry: Don't make much difference in the day-to-day, but the Tevinter one's probably the right one, if any of 'em are.
The Qun: Makes more difference in the day-to-day. Worth it to steal their shit, but don't get involved any deeper'n that.
Mages: Can't really trust 'em. Can't expect 'em to look at you like you ain't specks of dirt on their floor. If you can find one who'll heal you, though, keep that one around.
Templars: Southern invention. Not a bad idea, but it clearly don't work.
Slavery: Evil shit, wouldn't've put it in the world if she'd made it, but it's here, and it don't seem like it'll go away. At least people can get out sometimes.
Other races: If they pull their weight, they're welcome on the crew, same as anyone else. Not particularly sympathetic beyond that.
Jack Rackham: Eh. He's all right.

Adaptation Notes

Anne Bonny's background could theoretically belong anywhere in Thedas--Tevinter doesn't have the market cornered on exploiting vulnerable people. However, for ease of piecing together her story with the Black Sails AU already in place in-game, it seems most straightforward for her to be from a port city in the Tevinter Imperium.

Strengths & Weaknesses
STRENGTHS
Physical: Dual-wielding rogue who's extremely well-versed in stabbing people. Quick and agile, knows how to use her strengths to her advantage. Capable of taking a lot of pain without breaking.
Mental: Clever, observant, tactically minded. Sees far more than she says. Speaks Tevinter and Trade, knows how to say fuck in Ander, Rivaini, Antivan, and Orlesian. You know, the useful stuff.
Emotional: ...She's improved a lot, to be honest. Learning how to let go of grudges. Less codependent with her lover than she used to be. More willing to voice her opinion, slightly less liable to tell people to fuck off. Trying not to hurt people without reason. Capable of taking on leadership roles within a ship.

WEAKNESSES
Physical: Beaten within an inch of her life by a fucked-up terrifying Venatori, saved herself in such a way that sliced up the muscles in her palms. She's recovered, and she's still good with a sword, but she probably used to be better.
Mental: Formal education was rudimentary at best. No real inclination to improve upon it.
Emotional: Has a history of lashing out and murdering people when she's upset. Still has a variety of issues related to the traumas in her past. Could really stand to go through therapy! Too bad she's living in Thedas.

Inventory

• A pair of daggers and a few smaller knives
• A few sets of clothes, generally interchangeable
• A jaunty hat to hide under
• Some cash to speak of

Motivation

Mostly, it's that sliver of weird magic in her hand. Her hands are fucked up enough already without a piece of the Fade in them.
